What is Web Defacement?

Web Defacement is an attack on the website where the attacker damages the visual appearance of the website by either altering or replacing the originally present content, images or designs on the website.

The common objective of this attack is to damage the credibility of the entity/ individual owning the website.

Some cybercriminals do this just for fun.

What are the threats?

Internet is now the strongest medium of communication. Hence, these are the threats posed:

  • Spreading anti social messages by anti social elements of society
  • Religious and Government websites are common victims
  • Bank websites are targeted
  • Competitor companies try to defame other companies by these methods

What are the risks?

Tangible losses can be recovered. But web defacement attacks result in loss of

  • Credibility
  • Reputation
  • Brand value

These are intangible losses and cannot be easily recovered. Thus the consequences of such attacks are very high
