Salami Attack

What is a Salami Attack?

A salami is a slice of meat.

An attack is made on the computer system or network where a cybercriminal successfully transfers a small amount of money (a very negligible amount) from the victims file or bank account to his account.

The transferred amount is a small slice of a big amount and is hence called as Salami Attack.

What are the threats?

This attack exploits the lacuna in a weak accounting or banking system and transfers a small amount from every account to the fraudster’s account.

What are the risks?

Although this attack usually takes a small, nearly negligible amount in every attack, when these attacks are carried out continuously it results in a huge financial loss to the victim, usually banks or financial institutions. Additionally, reputation and credibility are also at stake.
